Residents of Alaska may live in the cold northern regions of the U.S., but they also get some special perks. Everyone gets an annual cash dividend from the Permanent Fund, sometimes as high as $2,000. Their massive geographical reach is proof that not everything is bigger in Texas. And Alaska Airlines, despite moving its headquarters from Anchorage to Seattle, still pays homage to its roots with a special loyalty program just for Alaska, called Club 49.
There are just three simple requirements for joining Club 49:
- Be an Alaska resident.
- Have an Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan number.
- Have an Alaska mailing address (even if it’s a PO Box).
Once enrolled, membership details are checked each year before automatic renewal. You can sign up on Alaska Airlines’ website. Although there are no age restrictions, you must call Alaska Airlines (1-800-252-72522) to enroll a child due to online privacy regulations.
In exchange for registering, Club 49 members get several free benefits and discounts:
Two free checked bags when traveling to or from Alaska on Alaska Airlines. You don’t need a special credit card or elite status. If you are traveling wholly within Alaska, then all customers receive three free checked bags (no Club 49 membership required).
Two one-way “Travel Now” discount certificates. These are valid for 30% off full (Y) fare Refundable Coach tickets when booked within 4 days of travel. You must be flying to, from, or within Alaska on Alaska Airlines.

The benefits aren’t huge, but they are significant in that you don’t need to do anything special to get them. Just be a resident of Alaska, a state where many things are more expensive than in the lower 48. Alaska Airlines’ gesture is yet another reason why I think they deserve their reputation as one of the best domestic airlines.
