Delta’s SkyMiles aren’t worth a whole lot due to a new five-tier award chart coming soon and some fairly restrictive rules around booking awards. So if you apply for one of the many different Delta credit cards issued by American Express, you should make sure that you are getting one of the largest sign-up bonuses available.
This week only, Delta and Amex are offering a special offer that increases the sign-up bonus for the entry level Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card to 50,000 SkyMiles after you spend $1,000 in the first three months. You’ll also receive a $50 statement credit after making any Delta Air Lines purchase in the first three months. The usual $95 annual fee is waived the first year.
For comparison, the standard offer for this card is only 30,000 miles, though some people in competitive markets like Seattle have been getting targeted 50K offers for some time now.
I don’t actually think it’s a great card to carry long-term. Though it has no foreign transaction fees, the benefits don’t strike me as very useful. For example, the only category bonus offered is 2X miles on Delta purchases. You can get a free checked bag and priority boarding, but these may not be useful to you if you already have elite status or if you prefer to carry on.
I often recommend the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® card instead if you’re a regular Delta customer. But for a quick 50,000 miles, this Gold card isn’t a bad deal at all. Just be sure to apply by December 21 during this limited-time offer.
