Park City is one of the most convenient ski destinations in the country. In addition to some great snow and ski resorts, it’s also very close to Salt Lake City airport. I’ve been there a couple times now with my parents have have always marveled at the easy drive — just a 45-minute trip on a well-maintained highway.
For those looking to use points, Marriott and Hilton have had a few hotels in the area, and Starwood has the exclusive St. Regis Deer Valley not far away. Our last trip included a stay at the Marriott MountainSide timeshare at the base of the Park City Mountain Resort. Hyatt also recently opened the Hyatt Escala Lodge at the base of nearby Canyons Resort.
Fortunately there are cheaper options. A new Hyatt Place is opening this winter in Park City just a mile from Canyons. Room rates will start at around $197 for pre-paid rooms or $219 for the Hyatt Daily Rate (but even this has a punitive 45-day cancellation policy). The only non-stock photo on the website this rendering, so it’s hard to tell how much progress has been made.
I also haven’t been able to determine the award rate if using points, but I expect it will be 15,000 points (Category 4) or less. Currently no award rooms can be booked.
The good news is that Hyatt Place is one of the best budget hotel brands. I like the beds, the living area is spacious, and the quality is very consistent — especially when you get new construction. Update: My contact at Hyatt says the construction is coming along nicely, and it should be open in December. However, reservations are currently being accepted only for travel on/after February 29, 2016.
Park City tends to have good snow. I think anyone who makes reservations for early March will still be satisfied with their trip. I’ll let you know if I see something earlier become available.
Note: Park City Mountain Resort and Canyons have officially merged and will be joined by a new inter-mountain gondola for the 2015-2016 season. I’ll have more news on that in a future post.
