What happens when you combine two ski destinations, convenient airport access, and $50 million in improvements? The largest ski resort in the country. Vail Resorts, which already owned Canyons, purchased nearby Park City Mountain Resort last year and merged the two into one: Park City.
The most important change is the new Quicksilver gondola, which connects the two formerly separate ski areas. It’s impossible to miss Canyons as you drive past it, heading from the freeway to downtown Park City. But I never went because once at our hotel or condo or anywhere within walking distance of a chairlift I wasn’t very interested in taking a shuttle elsewhere.
The gondola means I can ski for the morning at the former PCMR and then head over to the former Canyons after lunch without missing a beat. Additional upgrades to King Con Express and Motherlode Express on the former PCMR side will mean fewer lines until the next run.
I’m a fan of big resorts with varied terrain so that it doesn’t feel like I’m traveling the same run over and over. With the new Hyatt Place opening this winter, hopefully I get a chance to go back soon.
Where are your favorite places to go skiing? It’s time to start planning a trip!
