I announced in February my intention to offer a $1,000 travel scholarship to encourage students to travel more while they’re young and have the time. I have a strong belief that travel makes us better people — more compassionate, more open to new ideas, more curious, and more flexible in our thinking. While I certainly wish I had traveled more often when I was younger, I’m doing my best to make up for lost time.
When you’re young and still in school you have more flexibility than you realize to travel. Sometimes longer trips for weeks or months provide the most meaningful experiences. But traveling at that age is often stymied for financial reasons.
This scholarship has no strings attached. I don’t want you to do anything except use it to travel. I’m not looking for academic excellence or participation in extracurricular activities (although if you have some to mention in your application, that could help). I’m just looking for a good argument about how travel will make a difference in your life. If you’re still in college or know someone who is, I recommend you set pen to paper and start thinking.
Remember, applications are due tonight at 11:59 PM (Pacific Time). Full details can be found on the scholarship page.
