Just last Friday (May 1, 2020) American Express announced several changes to their credit credit cards to make them more relevant. Many travel cards such as Delta, Marriott, and Hilton now earn bonus miles at grocery stores. The American Express Platinum card announced streaming and wireless services incentives. Now, On top of the two new $20 monthly credits, Amex is introducing a new $200 travel credit.
One Time, $200 Credit
American Express is known for making it difficult to use their credits. Like the monthly Uber credit, or the bi-annual Saks credit, this one requires you to jump through hoops. Platinum card holders will receive a $200 statement credit for a purchase made through American Express Travel. The purchase must be made through Amex travel, not directly with an airline or hotel. More details are to come later, but the following message was in today’s email from America Express.
Rumor has it that this credit is only for those who renew their American Express Platinum between April and December 2020. Those who renewed early are not included. If you receive this offer, please share. Especially if your renewal is Jan-March. If you don’t have this card, maybe it’s time to consider it.
This Credit is not necessarily a full $200, but it can be. If you book a ticket through Amex for $150. Then you’ll get $150. If you book a ticket for $400, then it’s a full $200 credit. Use this credit wisely come August.
Overall this just adds more value to the American Express Platinum card. If you use this wisely plus the $200 Airline fee reimbursement and all the other credits you can earn $1120 in credits. Netting $570! Twice the annual fee of the card. For now I’m holding on to my American Express Platinum, next year may be different.
