If you are an avgeek or know an avgeek, there is an auction for historic aircraft memorabilia that you shouldn’t miss. The auction is for parts of two former Lufthansa Boeing 707 jets.
Christmas is coming. If you have someone on your list that is an avgeek, already has everything or needs a living room conversation piece, this auction may be for you. Maybe somebody would want to replace their Subaru engine with a Rolls Royce Conway jet engine.
The Aircraft That Launched Us Into The Jet Age
The Boeing 707 was the first successful jet airliner that made crossing the Atlantic Ocean nonstop in six and half hours. Prior to the 707 and all of the airliners that followed, airliners were powered by piston engines turning huge propellers. The change to jet power reduced the complexity of not only the engines but also reduced the workload of the pilots in the cockpit. Jet turbine engines are simpler in design, smoother operating and burn cheaper jet fuel. Jet-powered aircraft increased the speed of airliners to 600 MPH and cruising altitudes of 40,000 feet.
The Boeing 707 also increased passenger capacity over the piston-powered airliners they replaced. The propeller aircraft like the Lockheed Constellation and Douglas DC-7 carried less than 100 passengers. The 707 in various models carried 120 – 180 passengers.
Pan American introduced Boeing 707 service on October 26, 1958 flying from New York to Paris. The 707 became obsolete as newer and more efficient aircraft were developed. The last 707 was built in 1976 and by the early 1980s, all 707 passenger airliners were withdrawn from service.
What’s For Sale
Dechow Auctioneers of Germany is conducting this historic auction. The auction is for aircraft parts and components and not complete aircraft. Both of these aircraft were dismantled earlier this year. The parts are from two Lufthansa Boeing 707 aircraft:
Looking at various photos, you should know that these aircraft were in “rough” condition prior to disassembly. If you need a cockpit, jet engine or even first class seats, here is your opportunity to own historic airliner memorabilia.
The Auction
Dechow Auctioneers of Germany will be conducting the auction for these historic pieces. The dates for the auction are:
- Starting date for the auction is September 24, 2021
- Closing date for the auction is October 24, 2021
This may be your last chance to add Boeing 707 memorabilia to your collection. Good luck, I hope that you win an important part of aviation history.
Final Thoughts
I am truly an avgeek and the idea of owning a Boeing 707 cockpit really piques my interest. I did my homework first, I checked with the boss and she said absolutely NO. She reminded me that we have run out of wall space for all of my current aviation memorabilia. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to take part in this auction.
For you, this may be your best opportunity to add to your aviation collection.
