More than 300 days after I applied, my NEXUS application was finally processed, but unfortunately I again have to go through the process of an interview. This is a hassle any time, especially now that all NEXUS enrollment centers are closed. This is now my second NEXUS renewal. Even with comparatively limited travel over the last few years of this 5 year cycle, it is rather disappointing to see that another interview is required.
NEXUS enrollment centers remain closed, and no remote interviews possible
For my first renewal, back in 2016, I drove to Detroit for the NEXUS renewal interview. That is the closest NEXUS enrollment center to where I live. Today zero enrollment centers are open. The office in Detroit is not listed. None of the locations have any available appointments, at all.
The list of US-based enrollment centers is much shorter than it used to be, with only 4 sites. The Canadian locations seem to be similar to what they have been. But no matter, there are currently zero locations offering interview appointments.
It seems that remote interviews via Zoom are an option. But for now at least, despite this showing up, this option is only for Global Entry. Of course NEXUS interviews require the presence of both US CBP agents and Canadian CBSA agents, this currently is not, and apparently never has been available at all.
Since the spring of 2020, NEXUS enrollment centers and therefore interview appointments were available for all of 3 weeks between late November and December 2021.
NEXUS Renewal shows Conditional Approval, now what?
Thankfully, a 2 year grace period is extended to all NEXUS members in the process of renewal. Current memberships are valid for 2 years after the posted expiration date on cards for those members with a renewal pending. Since my application status shows conditional approval, 2 years from the date I received that status I must to complete an interview. Hopefully I’ll be able to find an appointment sometime in the next 2 years. Ideally via Zoom, but if not, during routine travels. I really would prefer that to making a special trip just for an interview.
