If you’re an American Express Delta cardholder, there’s a new option available when you want to redeem miles called “Fly Now, Earn Later.” As of now, this option appears to be targeted to certain cardholders only.
Eligible cardholders can now borrow miles for a redemption and earn them back over the following six months period. Note that you can’t borrow an unlimited number of miles, the miles you can borrow are tied to your spending patterns on your card. At the end of the six month period, any miles that remain unearned will be billed to you at a rate of 2.5 cents per mile.
If you are targeted and intend to make use of this benefit, I would recommend that you are sure of your ability to earn back the miles you borrow. Being charged 2.5 cents per mile after six months for Delta miles doesn’t qualify as cheap!
To find out if you’re targeted, login to your American Express account, navigate to your Delta card, and click on the ‘Benefits’ section in the top menu. My American Express Delta Gold card was not targeted for this benefit.
