Earlier this year, American Airlines announced an upgrade to their passenger experience by introducing all new amenities kits for their international first and business class passengers and first class passengers on their transcon, Los Angeles to New York, Los Angeles to Miami and San Francisco to New York routes. These new Heritage Series amenities kits will celebrate the nine airlines that make up the New American Airlines we know today. Those nine airlines are:
- American Airlines
- AirCal
- Allegheny
- America West
- Piedmont
- PSA
- Reno Air
- Trans World Airways
- US Airways
The contents of the new Heritage Series kits will all be the same (only the case will be different). The kits will be distributed from February 2015 to January 2016 with each kit rotating every 3 to 4 months. I was lucky enough to get a Reno Air one on my last LAX – JFK A321T flight in first class. Bag/Container – I love this kit! The case itself is simple and sleek with a light gray color and red elastic band accent. There’s a nice metal American Airlines branding on the lower right hand corner and the inside flap is decorated with the Reno Air snowcapped mountains design. This clutch style, case is intended to double as a mini-tablet case for future use. The inside is lined in soft vinyl to keep your tablet secure and scratch-free. Score: 5.
Product – This is a unisex kit and contains the same products for men and women. American Airlines has partnered with New York based cosmetics firm, Red Flower, for the contents of their amenities kits (and Admirals Club shower rooms). Inside the transcon, first class kit, you’ll find a Red Flower branded “Wanderlust” lip balm stick, hand and face towelette and a trial size tube of hand and body lotion. The products have a fresh and flowery (but not feminine) scent and appear to be high quality. Score: 3.5.
Comfort items – The comfort items include an adjustable eye mask, ear plugs and socks. The soft cotton eye mask and socks are reusable and come in a green color to match the Reno Air motif. The unbranded ear plugs do the trick but are nothing special. Score: 4.
Miscellaneous items – The kit also includes a single use toothbrush and small tube of toothpaste. Score: 2.
Extras: None. Score: 1.
Overall, this American Airlines transcon first class amenity kit scores a 3.1 in our ratings but don’t let the score fool you! This rating system compares all amenities kits, regardless of travel class, on the same scale. Because this kit is compared to other international first and business class kits, it will obviously not score as high. However, considering this is a TRANSCON first class kit, it scores VERY well and has everything you need to make a transcon flight comfortable and enjoyable. Kudos American Air!
