Last year I was fortunate enough to receive an Elite Status Match from American Airlines where AA matched my status from Delta and then American attempted to woo me and win my business travel. Although I enjoyed flying American, I had a hard time moving my travel completely to them because they require elites (other than Executive Platinum—their top tier elites) to use 500 mile upgrade certificates for domestic upgrades. Delta, on the other hand, provides free upgrades to all elites (when space permits). Since I wasn’t matched to their Executive Platinum level, I ended up only flying AA a few times last year and only crediting around 9,000 Elite Qualifying Miles (EQM) to my AA account.
The 2012 elite status year ends tomorrow and EQM that counted towards the 2013 year ended on 12/31/12. I had accepted my fate and knew I would be dropping down to just a casual flying on AA, for I did not meet the threshold of Gold Elite with AA that requires 25K EQM. Yet, to my surprise: Today, when I checked the mail the following letter arrived from AA:
Sure enough, AA is giving me Gold Status through 2014! This means my 500-mile upgrades that I’ve earned are not gone away (only elites can use 500 mile upgrades & those booked full fare Y & B) and flying with American as I work my way back to a higher status will surely be more comfortable! Thanks for the soft landing American!
Did you drop in Elite status this year? Did American Air or any other airline provide you with a soft landing? If so I would LOVE to hear about!
