June 12, 2013 American Airlines initiated nonstop service from San Diego to Miami, reopening a route that has not been served in over 20 years! The relaunch of this route will not only connect point-to-point travelers, but open up a slew of markets via 1 stop to the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe via American’s mega hub in South Florida.

Flights are time perfectly for connections both ways, getting travelers into Miami early enough to catch an onward flight anywhere or perfect for a business meeting or a day at the beach for those not continuing past Miami. The same goes for the return flight from Miami, allowing business travelers to finish their meetings, or late enough for connecting traffic.
To celebrate this flight, American Air is offering Frequent fliers bonus points for travel. Registration is required, allowing AAdvantage members the possibility to earn triple miles for travel in First Class, or double miles for travel in the Main Cabin.
The celebration at San Diego included a slew of Cuban-American food, drinks, and cake along with a couple of speakers about the new service and a ribbon cutting ceremony. Although the best part of the launch of the new flight (other than the two free tickets the airline gave away to fliers) was the live music and dancer. I took a quick video for my friends and readers at upgrd. Honestly, if there were gate parties like this every day flying would be MUCH more enjoyable!
