Expedition cruises are very different from larger ship ocean cruises with 2,500 or more people. First, know you are on a much smaller ship. Hurtigruten ships only have 500 passengers max capacity when traveling to Antarctica. Also, when you are on an expedition nearly everything is included on Hurtigruten ships. There are items you can be upcharge for, such as alcohol outside of meal time, or the use of the Spa, but you won’t have to worry about the costs of excursions, hiking, zodiac tours or more. Also, on every Hurtigruten expedition, staff gratuities are included in the cost. There’s no surprise staff appreciate daily charge added to your account.

When To Visit Antarctica

Do remember, there’s always a trade off when choosing who to travel with. Unlike Nat Geo which has a max of 120 people onboard, Hurtigruten ships are larger. This does mean your time will be more limited off the ship due to international treaties which govern tourism in Antarctica. Yet, do not let that be a detractor.
