My, how time flies. Exactly one year ago today, The Road More Traveled joined the UPGRD network, after a one year run as a free agent blog on Blogger. When I started blogging in June of 2013, I had no idea it might eventually lead to an opportunity to write for a big blog like UPGRD. Thanks to fellow UPGRDRs Rohan and Mike, though, I received an invitation to join the blog, and on June 13th, 2014, my welcome post on the renamed Road More Traveled went live. (Technically, my first “real” post appeared a day later, with a recap of a cruise line shore excursion to Arica, Chile.) Since then, the blog has certainly expanded its reach, growing from approximately 300 views a month to – well, 4,100 doesn’t make me a web juggernaut, but it’s still better than 300.
I’ve been asked a couple of times why I write for what is largely a frequent flyer/award travel blog, when I neither fly a whole lot nor play the points and miles game very much. The best answer I can give to that is, I hope to present a different perspective on the travel experience, from someone without airline/hotel elite status or a ton of miles to burn. Air travel today may not be the most pleasant experience without a pocket full of SWUs to UPGRD to first class, but over the past year, I’ve tried to demonstrate all the other ways to enjoy your vacation time, from cross-country road trips to catch cruises, to boutique hotels in unique destinations, to scouring the nearby countryside in search of a hamburger.
So what’s in store for year two of the Road More Traveled? Ironically, a lot more more air travel than I expected, with an award trip in British Airways First Class coming up in a couple of weeks, along with trips to Eastern Europe in business class and Japan in coach later this fall (I might even re-gain elite status in AAdvantage, albeit at the lowly Gold level). But you’ll also see more traditional content, including a road trip in Britain to visit Stonehenge, a cruise from Istanbul to Rome – and yes, plenty more restaurant reviews, both local and abroad. And I’m sure there will be another decent-size road trip in the cards sometime between now and next June.
I’d like to thank you, my readers, for joining me on the ride, and to all of my fellow UPGRD bloggers for your help and support in making this blog better. In addition to the main page here on UPGRD, please consider checking out my Instagram and Twitter profiles, as well as the Road More Traveled’s new Facebook page. This fledgling blog is grateful for all of your lkes and follows, Thanks again for reading, and look for more great content over the next year!
