Last week Delta Skyclubs rolled out their first round of enhancements after increasing Skyclub prices and previewing enhancements earlier this year which included new food items, spa services, and amenities such as shoe shines. The first enhancement included a new menu which appeared to include a growing list of items of which the SkyClub currently did not offer. The long list was quite deceptive to the naked eye, looking as though it included 50 plus Items, but really only include a few food options with flavors of muffins and description of fruit jams, wheat vs white toast and items such as milk taking up an entire line themselves. As one could imagine the new breakfast spread really wasn’t much of an enhancement. Before the new menu rolled out last week Delta clubs already included: Oatmeal and fixing, bagels, yogurt, fresh fruit, mini cinnamon rolls, scones, mini waffles, and a slew of spreads and jams. So what was really added? Cereal, hard boil eggs, and English muffins.

I visited the Skyclub in Salt Lake City, Delta’s hub, and I expected to be wooed by the new dining options. Instead, I found a table full of carbs with a small toaster which can only hold two bagels or 4 slices of toast at the epicenter. Long queues formed as the industrial toaster toasted one item per minute and patrons waited semi-patiently all grumbling that Delta need more than one toaster—especially in a hub city! The Atkins unfriendly food options were abundant in SLC and to no surprise, the breakfast buffet was missing the only solid source of protein: eggs.
I visited the SLC Skyclub last Friday (8/15) and Monday (8/18) and the options did not change nor were there anything new on Monday that was not available on Friday morning. The Skyclub enhancements are little of an upgrade over what Skyclubs offered before and are still subpar when comparing the offering to Delta’s competitors overseas, or those airlines just North or South of the border. The food option still are better than that of United and American, but fall behind Alaska’s famous pancake machine. If you’re hungry, my advice to you—skip the Skyclub and find something in the airport, the extra $8 will be worth it!
