SkyTeam announced today that Garuda Indonesia is on track to become the alliance’s 20th member airline and also its 2nd South East Asian carrier and 7th Asian carrier. A long time in the making and planning, the airline is now finally meeting the requirements to become an official member airline and is scheduled to be integrated into the SkyTeam network by March 2014.
SkyTeam confirms that it will welcome Garuda Indonesia as its 20th member in March, 2014. the national airline of Indonesia, Garuda will be SkyTeam’s second member from Southeast Asia. With the addition of Garuda, a whole slew of new routes and destinations will be served by the ever growing SkyTeam. Many Places which NO other alliance currently serves!
Garuda Indonesia’s domestic and growing international network will give SkyTeam a footprint in Indonesia, as we strengthen our presence in the Southeast Asia region,” said Michael Wisbrun. “Garuda has worked hard to meet the membership criteria required by SkyTeam, including implementing a new IT platform, and we look forward to welcoming the airline in March next year.
This is great news for Skyteam flyers because not only does this open up additional long haul options from Europe to Asia, it also opens a world of possibilities for travel through South East Asia. The small carrier has worked diligently over the last several years to renew its fleet and image and in doing so successfully earned a 4 star rating from SkyTrax.
Indonesia is by far one of my favorite places to travel and I’m looking forward to more connections and award space to Bali, Sumatra, Mataram, Flores, and more! Oh, the great diving and surfing I’ll be able to get to for next to nothing! This is a win for the Skyteam and Skyteam flyers! And from personal experience, I’ve flown Garuada on a domestic Indonesian flight, and other than the long delay (which the provided lunch vouchers for us) it was a very pleasant experience in economy!
