I wrote earlier about Hilton’s “Double Your HHonors” promotion, which promised double Hilton HHonors points or double miles with their many airline partners through May 31. Apparently that promotion was a hit and rather than try something new they plan to extend it for the rest of the summer, from June 1 through August 31.
It’s a great opportunity to earn some extra points during your summer vacation. All 4,000+ hotels under the Hilton umbrella are participating so you won’t have to worry about exclusions.
One key rule is that you must register for the promotion before you check-in. Many people forget to register for promotions either because they don’t know their plans this far in advance. I think it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you already registered for the spring promotion, then you won’t have to register again. Full terms and conditions are available on the offer page.
Pick Double Points, Not Double Miles
I strongly recommend choosing double points instead of double miles. It stands to reason that Hilton would offer a more generous award if you choose points in its own program vs. someone else’s. The base earning rate for most Hilton properties is 10 points per dollar, so this promotion means getting an extra 10 points. HHonors points are worth about 0.4 to 0.5 cents each, and there are no blackout dates on awards as long as a standard room is available.
If you pick double miles, the standard rate for earning miles is just 1 mile per dollar (you’ll have to pick “Points & Miles” as your MyWay selection). So double miles means a second mile. Airline miles are worth between 1 and 2 cents each depending on the program and do have blackout dates in the sense that “saver” award space is limited on most routes.
Stack Other Offers to Earn Almost 40 Points per Dollar
While Hilton has some very expensive award rates, almost as high as 100,000 points per night at the best properties during peak season, they compensate by making it very easy to earn those points.
Anyone who stays at a Hilton property a few times a year should probably have a Hilton HHonors Surpass credit card from American Express or a Hilton HHonors Reserve credit card from Citi. Both waive the first year’s annual fee and include free Gold elite status, which includes a bonus 2.5 points per dollar and free breakfast. If you pay with the card, you get an additional 10-12 points per dollar (the Surpass card offers more).
The total earning potential per stay is 39.5 points per dollar even if you aren’t a frequent traveler:
- 10 points per dollar (base rate)
- 5 points per dollar (for choosing Points & Points as your MyWay earning style)
- 12 points per dollar (Hilton Surpass credit card)
- 2.5 points per dollar (Gold elite status from the credit card)
- 10 points per dollar (“Double Your HHonors” summer promotion)
So imagine your next vacation comes with a $1,000 hotel bill. That could easily earn 39,500 bonus points. Someone who doesn’t register for the promotion and doesn’t have a Hilton credit card will get only 15 points per dollar — a total of 15,000 points.
