As much as I love Delta, I also love to hate them! I love 90% of their in flight crew, I think they have some of the best IFE and planes for a domestic carrier (even if they are old at least they are refurbished) and have a great global route map! My upgrades from San Diego clear about 70% of the time as a Gold Elite and the other benefits including the “have one on us coupons” when I print my boarding pass at home outweigh the benefits and the lack of service of other US legacy carriers. However, Delta has once again done something I VERY MUCH DISAPPROVE OF! They’ve restarted rebooking bumped passengers in their original class of service instead of Y class!
(For those of you who do not know how upgrade clear on delta check out this website from delta, also remember Y class just means Full Fare Economy – the highest ticket price for that route in economy)
From my experience when taking a bump on US, Alaska, United, or American not only are you rebooked in Y Class but you also get the benefits of Y class. This means you get 150% redeemable & elite miles, but you also get placed as #1 on the upgrade list (if eligible) because of being rebooked in Y class. Delta threw a wrench in the game months ago when they stopped giving bumped passengers the class of service bonus, giving the bumped passenger the same amount of miles they would have received. In other words, if you were original booked in K class or T class but got bumped, you still only received 100% of miles instead of the Y class 150%! This was just one of many downside of the Delta takeover of NWA.
Today I found out Delta screws the bump passengers more than ever, they’ve stopped rebooking bumped passengers in Y class! When I was originally bumped on my flight from MSP-SAN I was rerouted MSP-LAX-SAN my LAX-SAN flight cleared to business instantly when I was rebooked and per the redcoat who bumped me and rebooked me Y stated it was done by the “upgrade controller.” He was shocked to see me upgraded before he even finished the transaction! But it was done and he told me he was happy to see it went through so quick. I headed off to the SkyClub and had myself a drink while I awaited my flight.
While in the SkyClub I checked the upgrade list and I was #1 of #34 on the upgrade list. I was pleased with my almost confirmed upgrade because I would have missed it by a long shot otherwise! However as I was leaving the club I noticed that suddenly I was #17 on the upgrade list and I had my class of service had been changed from Y back to K!
I rushed to the desk and they informed me that I was rebooked in the class of service that I purchased and that was policy….WHAT?!??!?! SINCE WHEN!?!? I took a bump last week and was rebooked in Y and remained in Y and received the upgrades the entire way, this was clearly new. Since when did they implement this change?! The SkyClub agent said there was nothing they could do. With 40 minutes before boarding, I left the club and went on a mission to find a Delta redcoat.
Thankfully when I arrived at G2, my gate to LAX, there was a redcoat at the gate. I approached her and asked her to confirm my placement on the upgrade list. She confirmed that I was #15 on the list. I explained to her I was bumped and was rebooked in Y class by a Redcoat, and she the reconfirmed it was Delta’s policy to rebook you in the class of original service! AGAIN, FLUSTERED! She then reaffirmed that Delta’s policy is to rebook passengers in their ORIGINAL class of service and she admitted that she moved me from Y class back to K class in order to accommodate her Diamond passengers! She then gave me a dirty look and said, “I’m sorry Mr. Horan but you’re only Gold and our Diamond passengers come first.”
My ears were bleeding with disgust! In all my years of flying Delta ( 7 now) I’ve NEVER once had a Delta gate agent talk down to me due to my status or lack off!
(RANT) I did NOT take a bump to sit in the back of the plane, sit at an airport for 2 hours, and twiddle my thumbs! I knew the previous agent rebooked me in Y class because we even had a conversation about it and I was going to stand firm that I received Y class and was put back on the list as #1. (RANT DONE)
I explained to this redcoat that I was rebooked in Y class by the previous redcoat agent on purpose. I had copies of not only my ticket that had the letter Y on it, but I had thankfully received a print out of my rerouting in “Delta language” that showed me in Y class if I was bumped. Between the tickets and the print out, the redcoat reluctantly rebooked me in Y class and I was again #1 on the upgrade list. Thankfully I also knew the agent’s name which rebooked me. SO take note when being bumped!
Point is, gate agents and Redcoats and even per Delta assist on twitter and the SkyClub in MSP (yes I did send a message to @DeltaAssist) confirmed that when bumped Delta is supposed to be rebooked in your original class of service. This could mean that gone are the days of Y class and almost 100% confirmed upgrades for the lower elites when bumped. However, I warn you, if you’re bumped and are rebooked in Y class, watch your reservation like a HAWK! If they remove you from Y class, talk to a gate agent/Redcoat IMMEDIATELY! DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!
If you’re bumped demand you’re rebooked in Y. If you’re going to help Delta out, they need to help you out! The cash payment is required by law if you’re involuntarily bumped, and a mutual agreement must be made if you’re voluntarily bumped. If you’re going to save Delta the cash payment, Delta could at least offer you a bonus as a sign of a thanks on top of it! So watch your reservations, be sure to be rebooked in Y, and be sure to get your upgrade. I’ve only experienced this issue in MSP, but God knows if it’s going to spread across the Delta system. Watch out! This is one of the times I love to hate Delta and advise you NOT to help Delta out!
