Marriott’s 2016 fall MegaBonus has been announced and despite the bonus having nothing MEGA about it, the small bonus for road warriors and casual hotelier can add a few additional bonus points to the nearly worthless* stockpile of Marriott Points that many of us collect while traveling for work.
This fall, choose your own Marriott MegaBonus by choosing your own path to rewards to earn up to 50,000 bonus points. Unlike past MegaBonus’ which were targeted, this time Marriott is allowing members to choose from a maximum of 50,000 points, or a minuscule 5,000 points.
- Option 1: Earn 10,000 bonus points for every 10 nights, up to 50,000 bonus points
- Option 2: Earn 5,000 bonus points after the second stay (max 5,000 bonus points)
The options are nothing to write home about, but will add a little cushion to your balance books. After all, this is nothing like past MegaBonuses which rewarded a free night stay after just 2 stays! Instead, you can earn 5,000 points by staying twice at any Marriott property or 50,000 points by staying 50 nights at Marriott. Per the T&C, you will not earn 1,000 points per night if you opt in for option 1, meaning if you say 39 nights between September 15 and January 15, 2016 only 30,000 bonus points will be earned, not 39,000 points.
Even as a road warrior who travels Monday – Thursday for work, staying in Marriott hotels three nights a week (Not by choice, but my company contract), I will only stay approximately 45 nights between September 15 and January 15, thus not maximizing my bonus potential. A semi pathetic Megabonus, but nevertheless a bonus.
*I refer to Marriott points as nearly worthless due to the fact that most Marriott Hotels in major cities and destinations of interest are 35,000 to 50,000 points per night.
