Everyone likes surprises. On a recent trip to San Diego, when I walked up to my hotel room after checking in, I was certainly surprised to see this:
An upgrade to the Presidential Suite, for free!
I have been quite fortunate with free upgrades in my Starwood stays through the years. However, this was the first time I’ve received a Presidential Suite. Unfortunately, my stay at was quite brief. I was just checking into this hotel around 8pm before an early morning flight.
Sheraton San Diego Marina Presidential Suite
I guess I was tipped off of something going on with regard to an upgrade when I saw this on the SPG app.
I didn’t think too much of it after a long day of working, and especially after bad traffic returning my rental car then walking to the hotel, I was kind of stressed out by the time I arrived. I’ve stayed at the Sheraton San Diego Marina before, but never had an upgrade like this here or anywhere.
The front desk agent at check in didn’t alert me to anything, just processing my check in and handing off the keys. I took the elevator up to my floor, and noticed the sign outside my room in the top photo. Excellent! I didn’t bother to use any of my Suite Night Awards since this was only a brief stay.
Unfortunately this was a very short stay, I didn’t do much beyond sleep in this giant room. I checked in after 8pm, and my flight the next morning was about 6am. Plus, I was meeting Rocky for a drink before he headed out for a redeye that evening.
The marine-themed room consisted of a large living room area with a full kitchen and dining area. There was a room I called the den on one side with a full bathroom, and then the bedroom on the other side with a larger bathroom with separate tub and shower, plus a toilet and a bidet.
Thanks for the freebie Starwood! Any similar stories of unusual and unexpected upgrades?
