There are two Radisson Blu hotels in Copenhagen so make sure you are booking the correct one. This review is for the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel. The Radisson Blu Royal Hotel is located in central Copenhagen whereas the Radisson Blu Scandinavia is located east of central Copenhagen, across the canal. The Radisson Blu Scandinavia will be more competitively priced but if you plan on walking and relying on public transportation, the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Copenhagen will be the more convenient of the two.
The Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Copenhagen is located approximately 5 miles from Copenhagen International Airport. You can hire a taxi from the airport to the hotel or do what my friends and I did and take the train. The train from Copenhagen International Airport to Copenhagen Central Station will take you approximately 15 minutes. Once you arrive at the train station, exit out towards Tivoli Gardens, make a left hand turn and walk half a block to the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Copenhagen. If you need a reference point, just look for the tall SAS building.
If I had to give it a rating, I would say the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Copenhagen is a solid 3.5 star hotel located in a 5 star location. The location is perfect for exploring central Copenhagen and its beautiful sights. Tivoli Gardens is right across the street. Copenhagen Central Train Station is 3 minutes away (on foot) and the hop on-hop off bus tours pick up right outside the hotel. Location-wise, it doesn’t get much more convenient than this.
Now, for the not so great news. The Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Copenhagen was built in the 1960’s and is in desperate need of an upgrade. The hotel is going through a renovation currently and the public areas and some of the rooms have been updated but it’s far from complete. The lobby and downstairs area have been renovated and the design direction shows a lot of potential.
But unfortunately for us, our room hasn’t been touched since 1960. On this trip, we booked a standard room with two twin beds. Upon check-in, we were assigned a room on the 14th floor of the hotel, 1415. The room was clean and comfortable and had a great view of the city but lacked storage spaces and felt really cramped for two people.
Our standard room was furnished with two twin beds fairly close to each, a tight sitting area and a simple work desk.
Room amenities included an iron/ironing board, kettle with a selection of instant coffee and teas, in-room safe and a mini-bar fridge.
Radisson Blu Royal Hotel CopenhagenBathroom-wise, ours was small and kind of dingy. And unless you’re traveling with a partner, the bathroom space could only accommodate one person at a time. The water pressure was annoyingly weak and the faucet sprayed water in several different directions. It wasn’t the best experience.
Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Copenhagen bathroom amenitiesHowever, my main complaint with the hotel room was the air conditioning, or lacked thereof, during the non-summer months. During winter/spring/fall months, the AC is turned off and the hotel is kept very warm. Our room got really warm every night and the temperature control did nothing but spew out more warm air into the room. In order for us to cool the room down, we had to leave the windows opened all day and night to let in the cold air. But by doing so, we also had to deal with all the traffic noise (people yelling, cars honking, ambulance sirens, etc.) from below. Bring some earplugs if you are a light sleeper.
Other hotel amenities include a business center located on the lobby floor with PC computers and a printer. There are no pools, Jacuzzis or fitness center located on-site but the hotel does contract with the Fitness DK gym next door for hotel guests to use. The Fitness DK gym is located out the front door to the left, approximately 50 feet down. It’s a decent gym facility.
Radisson Blu Royal Copenhagen overall thoughts
Overall, we had a decent experience with the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Copenhagen. Like I mentioned earlier, it’s a 3.5 star hotel in a 5 star location. This isn’t the nicest hotel by any means but the location can’t be beat. A good portion of the hotel has been renovated but our room was old and dated and the lack of air conditioning made the room temperature unbearable. However, staff and service-wise, everyone was great. From the front desk crew to the concierge and service staff, all the employees were polite, friendly and helpful. They really did go out of their way to ensure we had a pleasant stay.
