San Diego is FINALLY getting a direct flight to Asia! That’s right you heard me right! After many years of one stop service to Asia, San Diego will Finally be served by JAL flight to Japan! And to make this news even better, JAL is deploying the 787 on this route, so this is a double win for San Diego Travelers!
Starting in December 2012 JAL will serve San Diego 4x a week, departing for Japan on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays. Come March 2013, JAL plans on increasing this to daily service.
San Diego to Asia has always been a highly sought out route, however until now, not aircraft could travel non stop from San Diego to Japan due to the short runway. Due to the hill on the approach to the San Diego airport, and the limited of ILS being installed only on runway 9 that runs East to west, the runway is only 8,000 feet in length. With Japan being over 5700 miles from San Diego and weight restraints on aircraft departing from SAN, this route was never possible. However thanks to the 787 lightweight composite design, JAL will finally be able to take advantage of
San Diego International Airport has seen a lot of growth in the last couple of years despite an economic downturn and cuts in flights by most airlines. Not only is the airport going through a major expansion, adding 10 new gates, more security, a dual level roadway, curb side check in and more.
Domestically, Alaska has added two destinations in Maui (2010) and Honolulu (2011) and Alaska recently announced three new daily destination from San Diego to be launched in 2012 which includes Fresno, Monterrey, and Santa Rosa, CA along with Reno, NV. Alaska also has launched direct flights to Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in recent years, really growing their presence at SAN. In addition, British Airways resumed service to London on a Boeing 777 in 2011, which had be suspended since 2003.
All this growth is great for San Diego Travelers, especially if you’re a AA mile point collector, for JAL, AS, and BA are ALL American Airline’s partners! JAL flight is also a VERY
welcome addition, for Travelers from San Diego will no longer have to endure drives to LA or boarder hops to Tijuana to fly nonstop across the Pacific!
