8/29/2012 Marks the day when the SkyTeam welcomes their first South American carrier and grows to 18 members strong! Today Aerolineas Argentinas (AR) joins Aeromexico as the SkyTeam’s second Latin America carrier. The carrier brings 40 new destinations to the SkyTeam global map and makes connections and flights through Argentina and South America easier for all SkyTeam fliers! Furthermore, this opens up MORE redemption opportunities for flights within South America and beyond (For example a SkyTeam member can now fly to Sydney via Buenos Aires!).
Aerolineas Argentinas is not a luxurious airline by any means and does not have the best reputation, however that doesn’t mean AR doesn’t have the potential. AR is currently restructuring both their routes and is attempting to revive itself as a dominate carrier in the South American Market.
Joining SkyTeam is a major achievement in Aerolineas Argentinas’ long-term restructuring plan. Key elements of this plan include fleet renewal and network rationalization, upgrading the entire IT platform, improving product quality and enhancing the frequent flyer program Aerolineas Plus.
AR is a perfect fit to the SkyTeam’s current network with partner airlines Delta, KLM, Air Europa, AeroMexico, Air France, and Alitalia; all already serving AR’s hub of Buenos Aires, bringing the number of daily SkyTeam depatures to over 120 daily departures to 53+ countries worldwide. By welcoming AR into the SkyTeam alliance, it will continue to grow its presence in Argentina and South America.
“We are pleased to be bringing our Argentinean customers access to a
greater worldwide network. Today also marks a significant milestone in our
efforts to strengthen our South American network,” said Michael Wisbrun,
SkyTeam’s Managing Director. “With the rapidly growing demand for travel to
South America and Argentina, Aerolineas Argentinas adds real value to our
alliance by opening up extensive business and leisure travel opportunities
for our customers”.
“Looking forward, we will continue to focus on this continent. Our founding
members Delta and Aeromexico are significant players in the Latin American
market and are leading the way in terms of finding new opportunities in
this region,” said Mr. Wisbrun. “Delta has expanded its cooperation with
Brazil’s GOL and Aeromexico, by building ground-breaking commercial
agreements. These will pave the way for further opportunities for SkyTeam
and our customers”.
Aerolineas Argentinas will continue to work itself through restructuring as they are welcomed into a global alliance. AR also announced that they will roll out SkyPriority at all airport locations by the end of 2012, lining themselves with current SkyTeam Practices! Therefore, SkyTeam fliers buckle up and enjoy the flight, for the SkyTeam is taking off in South America! Also, take note, Mr. Wisbrun has even hinted at GOL as a possible future SkyTeam member, further expanding the reach of the SkyTeam in Latin America!
