The latest Centers For Disease (CDC) list of Travel Health List (THL) countries was just released on Monday. With the surge of the delta variant, more countries were added to the Level 4 list.
How The CDC Assigns Travel Levels
The CDC reviews case data reported to the World Health Organization to determine a destination’s COVID-19 THN level.
THN thresholds are based on the number of COVID-19 cases in a destination.
Primary criteria for destinations with populations over 100,000
- Incidence rate (cumulative new cases over the past 28 days per 100,000 population)
- New case trajectory (have daily new cases increased, decreased, or remained stable over the past 28 days?).
Primary criteria for destinations with a population of 100,000 or fewer
- COVID-19 case counts* (cumulative new cases over past 28 days)
- New case trajectory (have daily new cases increased, decreased, or remained stable over the past 28 days?).
Countries assigned a Level 0 designation are those countries where the health threat level is unknown at this time.

CDC Guidance For The Vaccinated
The CDC urges anyone that is considering travel to be fully vaccinated. Here is a link to the CDC guidance page for when you’ve been fully vaccinated. If you need to get vaccinated, there is information on that page for finding a Covid-19 vaccine.
Final Thoughts
The Delta variant is expanding worldwide at an alarming level. The health threat lists from the CDC are issued as guidance for those planning on travel and are subject to change as conditions warrant. Countries that are at a low-risk today could elevate to a higher level. Stay safe, consider the risks of where you plan to travel and protect your family.
