The UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) program is a new initiative (Tax) by the British government. The purpose is aimed at streamlining entry procedures for international travelers. This system, modeled after similar programs like the United States ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) and Canada’s eTA. The idea is that by applying for entry, countries will know who is coming before they arrive. Itis designed to enhance border security while simplifying the travel process for eligible visitors. Many other countries including Australia and New Zealand have similar programs which have been in effect for more years than I can remember.
The United Kingdom will require the new ETA starting January 8, 2025. Keep reading for more information
Who Needs to Apply for the UK ETA?
The electronic travel authorization ETA is required for travelers from countries that currently do not need a visa to enter the UK for short stays. This means US Citizens who are both tourists and business visitors. Yet even if you are not entering the U.K. but you are connecting via London Heathrow (LHR) or another UK airport you must apply and get permission to travel before departure.
This new UK ETA requirement applies to individuals visiting the UK for up to six months or those transiting through the country. Nationals from countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand will need to apply for an ETA before checking in for their flights to the UK.
Currently European Citizens do not need a UK ETA, yet that will be changing very soon. EU passport holders will need a ETA UK starting April 2, 2025. European Union passport holders can start applying on March 5, 2025 for future travel.
How to Apply for a UK Electronic Travel Authorization
Applying for the UK ETA is a straightforward online process that takes only a few minutes via the UK ETA APP. For those who do not have smartphones, you can apply online.
Travelers will need to provide personal details, passport information, and details about their trip. It costs £10 to apply and you can pay with credit card, debit cards, or apple pay.
Everyone travelling needs to get an ETA, including babies and children. You can apply for other people if you have their details. Most applications are processed within 3 working days. A quicker decision is possible and approval sometimes happens within minutes. Once approved, the ETA is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport and is valid for multiple entries and transits for a period of two years.
Remember, a ETA is Non-Transferable. the ETA is tied to the traveler’s passport. If a passport is renewed or replaced, a new ETA application is required. Also, an ETA does not replace a visa and is not a permit for long-term stays or allows one to work in the UK. Travelers must still apply for appropriate visas for longer visits or employment.
When Will You Need a United Kingdom ETA?
The UK ETA program goes into effect on January 8, 2024. This timeline and January date was announced in November 2024 yet many travelers are still unaware. Do NOT show up to the airport on January 8 or later without an ETA.
The program is being rolled out in phases, starting with certain nationalities in 2024 and expanding to cover all visa-exempt travelers by the end of 2025. Travelers should check official UK government web pages for the latest updates and implementation timelines.
Bottom Line
If you are traveling to or through the United Kingdom in 2025, apply for your UK ETA as soon as possible. You will miss your flight and be denied boarding if your UK ETA is not approved before departure. The new requirement for US citizens, Canadian Citizens and 40+ other countries to enter or travel through the United Kingdom goes into effect on January 8, 2025. Even if you are connecting via the United Kingdom, such as at LHR and do not clear customs, you must still have a UK ETA to travel.
Travelers beware and pay attention. The EU is planning to implement a similar program with an approximate timeline of May 2025. Although as of now, the official start date has not yet been announced. You can find more information here: EU ETIAS Information.
