Announced today on the United Hub, United Airlines has announced that it has introduced satellite based wi-fi on the first of its international wide-body aircraft. It will be very interesting to see how the speeds compare to GoGo based in flight Wi-Fi. GoGo Wi-Fi uses a link to connect to the ground, and then it has speeds that are compareable to a non-LTE cellular internet conncetion. This connection is shared by the whole plane.
United has also announced pricing:
You can choose from two speeds: Standard, priced initially between $3.99 and $14.99 depending on the duration of flight, and Accelerated, priced initially between $5.99 and $19.99 and offering faster download speeds than Standard.
Well, that isn’t cheap, but I’ll probably still pay for it. I could not believe that the gogo-based Wi-Fi on my P.S. flight this past sunday was $21.95!!
There have been reports of planes out there with wi-fi already. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m looking forward to trying it out! Hopefully one of my flights this year will be Wi-Fi equipped.
