Through June 2, it is possible to earn up to a 67% bonus when you buy United miles. United miles normally cost 3.76 cents per mile with a minimum purchase of 1,000 miles. With the bonus, you can buy miles for the following prices:
- Buy 5,000 – 14,000 miles with 20% bonus – 3.14 cents per mile
- Buy 15,000 – 29,000 miles with 40% bonus – 2.69 cents per mile
- Buy 30,000 – 90,000 miles with 67% bonus – 2.26 cents per mile
Is Buying United Miles a Good Deal?
Generally I wouldn’t recommend buying miles because you can earn them much more cheaply through credit card sign up bonuses. However, if you are close to making a redemption that you have been eyeing or if you are always short on miles and have a very specific use for the miles (e.g., if the cost of the miles is less than just buying a ticket), it could be a good idea.
Unfortunately, you need to buy a lot of miles in order to get the lowest price and if you need less than 5,000 miles you’re not going to see any kind of bonus.
I personally value my United miles a little under two cents per mile, so it doesn’t make sense for my to buy miles speculatively. For these prices it likely doesn’t make sense for anyone to buy miles speculatively.
