They have yet to break ground (err, water), but GizMag reports on an agreement between Deep Ocean Technology and Ridgewood Hotels & Suites to build the Water Discus Hotel on a remote island in the Maldives. It seems like it might give the Park Hyatt every blogger is so fond of a run for its money. Of course, it won’t be part of a loyalty program, which would mean you’d actually have to pay for it. Ugh. What is the world coming to?! 😀
My feelings on this futuristic hotel are mixed. On the one hand, I feel I shouldn’t fly half-way across the world to stay inside a closed environment. I would literally be in the middle of a tropical ocean and unable to feel the breeze as I sit on the deck of my luxury villa. It reminds me too much of the obnoxious condo towers in Miami or Honolulu. If I go to the beach, I want something far more relaxed and comfortable.
However, you can’t deny the cool factor of sleeping under water! Being able to watch the tropical fish go by all day and night would be amazing. They’re even talking about putting airlocks in the rooms so you can still “dive” off your balcony into the ocean. That would be very impressive. I was always a little envious of the scientists in the novel Sphere, who were exploring a crashed ship at the bottom of the ocean. This is about as close as I would ever get to that.
What do you think? Is this hotel awesome enough to be worth paying cash instead of redeeming points for the nearby Conrad or Park Hyatt? What if points were an option? If you could book an award stay at a futuristic, modern hotel in a tropical setting, is that just too dissonant or would it be worth the experience?
